Book of John study notes: chapter 17-19Amy Zhao·Last edited June 11·23 minute readSavedBook of John study notes: chapter 17-19约17:1 耶稣说了这话,就举目望天说:“父啊,时候到了,愿你荣耀你的儿子,使儿子也荣耀你;These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee. After the 3 and half years calling for the world, Jesus finished his good works for God on earth. Then, the time for his last mission arrived, which was to die on the cross and show the world the resurrection. Jesus declared that all the power and miracles Jesus shew to the world were all directly from God, and Jesus also had the right to give the eternal life to all flesh. God was the only true God, and Jesus was the only Son of God. From all the teachings, and miracles from Jesus, this world understood of it.Jesus already finished the work that God planned him to do on earth, and Jesus did glorify God by his deeds. Jesus asked God to give him the glory that God promised to Jesus long time ago, which promised before the Creation of Heaven and Earth. All the flesh on earth belonged to God, but after Jesus finished his works to them, they belonged to Jesus Christ. And they knew all things that Jesus would have were all from God. For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.All the words given by Jesus were from God, and all his disciples knew the words and believed in the words. Now they believed that Jesus did come from God. Jesus said that he prayed for these disciples and these people that God gave to Jesus. But Jesus did not pray for the world, because not all flesh in the world were given to Jesus from God, such as the Jews and the Pharisees. From all the disciples and children belonged to Jesus, Jesus did receive glory from them. The glory was the people that God gave to Jesus. For in heaven, Jesus would be the vine, and his disciples and Christians were the rest branches coming later from this vine. They were one grape tree. Jesus prayed to God and asked God to let all his own people became one, just like God and Jesus were one. Jesus wished his disciples could be unified, not be dispersed. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. When Jesus walked in the world, he kept his people by the teaching from God. Jesus made it in full, none had been lost, but the son of perdition. The Son of Perdition was Judas Iscariot in that generation. As a prophecy for the End Age, the Son of Perdition in the western world is the coming antichrist, who will be Barack Obama.Jesus wished his disciples had full of joy in heart because of his words. Jesus predicted to his disciples that they would be hated by the world, because they were not for the world, just as Jesus himself. Jesus prayed to God for his people could be escaped from the evil while in the persecution. Jesus prayed to God that God may let his people to be sanctified from the teachings Jesus gave to them. Jesus prayed to God that God may let Jesus send done his people to preach the gospels of Jesus’s words and sanctify them on earth through the truth, just as how God sent down Jesus. These people from each generation are called as Saints, as they come down to the world with their missions, just as Jesus. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.Jesus prayed for both disciples and the children of God who should listen to these disciples. Jesus prayed for them to be unified as one, just like Jesus and God became one. Jesus was in the heart of his disciples, as God was in the heart of Jesus Christ. Jesus prayed the world may know that God loved them, as how God loved Jesus.Jesus wished God could let Jesus and his people staying together forever, on earth and also in heaven. And wished God could show them the glory that God promised to give to Jesus, even before the world existed. This evil world did not know God and God’s commandments, but from Jesus, they knew God did exist and God had love to his people from Jesus. Jesus shew God’s name and love to this world, and wished this love from God always staying within their hearts, just as Jesus was within them. When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples. Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. 约18:4 耶稣知道将要临到自己的一切事,就出来对他们说:“你们找谁?”Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. 你们若找我,就让这些人去吧!”Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: 约18:9 这要应验耶稣从前的话,说:“你所赐给我的人,我没有失落一个。”That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none. Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. 我父所给我的那杯,我岂可不喝呢?”Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?After the last dinner, Jesus lead his disciples into the Gethsemane garden to pray. Judas Iscariot also knew this place, hence lead the servants from the chief priests and the Pharisees to this garden to arrest Jesus. Jesus knew they were coming for him, and stepped forward and asked to whom they looking for. The servants said they looking for Jesus of Nazareth. Then Jesus answered he was. Then, the servants went backward and fell down on the ground, because they never thought Jesus was so brave. It was because the righteousness and no fear inside Jesus let the evilness falling down on the ground, and it was also God answered them and make the evilness falling down. Jesus asked them again whom they looking for. They answered and Jesus said himself was the one they looking for and let the rest people went away. Jesus never let any disciple to be persecuted by the Roman government, because Jesus used his own blood saved all his disciples from death. Hence, Jesus did not loss any one that belonged to him, as the scripture said.Peter cut off the right ear on a servant, and Jesus asked Peter to put his sword back in the scabbard. Jesus said it was Father God made this bitter cup for Jesus to drink, Jesus had to drink it. The cup was the cup of sins. All the sins in this cup was from his disciples and people Jesus saved. Now, it was the time for Jesus to pay off the sins. Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year. Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter. Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not. And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself. Then these servants arrested Jesus and took Jesus to Annas. Peter and another disciple following Jesus to see the high priest and the Pharisees. By the door, Peter could not go in, but another disciple went in because the high priest knew him. He spoke to the door keeper to let Peter went in. The door keeper asked Peter was he also a disciple to Jesus, Peter answered he was not. Peter was very scared in heart. Then, Peter with the servants of the high priest together standing besides the fire to warm themselves. The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world;I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said. 约18:22 耶稣说了这话,旁边站着的一个差役用手掌打他,说:“你这样回答大祭司吗?”And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so? 约18:23 耶稣说:“我若说得不是,你可以指证那不是;我若说得是,你为什么打我呢?”Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me? Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest. The high priest started to interrogate Jesus about his doctrines and about his disciples. Jesus answered all his teachings were given to the public, there were no to hide. Jesus said he never gave secret teachings in a temple or Jew synagogue, but everything he spoke was for everyone to hear. Here, Jesus said clearly that he never taught in the synagogue or in the temple. If Jesus gave teachings in the synagogue, it meant to give to the prophets and priests. The teachings Jesus left to the world were all for the public, for the general people, not for the servant group from God. The teachings for the priests and all high level servants of God will be preaching by Paul within the promised Gospel of God, which is in <Zhuan Falun>. Hence, for whoever read 《Zhuan Falun》 are the prophets, priests, high level servants, and apostles from God.Jesus asked the high priest to ask people around him on what Jesus spoke before. Then, an officer from the high priest slapped Jesus and asked was the attitude Jesus should answer the high priest. Jesus said if he said all correct, why he hit him. Then, Annas sent Jesus to Caiaphas, the high priest for that year, who used to say it was good for one man died for all people. 彼得不承认,说:“我不是!”And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not. 约18:26 有大祭司的一个仆人,是彼得削掉耳朵那人的亲属,说:“我不是看见你同他在园子里吗?”One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him? Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew. Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. 约18:29 彼拉多就出来,到他们那里,说:“你们告这人是为什么事呢?”Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man? They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee. Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die. When Peter warmed himself at the door in front of fire, someone asked him was him one disciple from Jesus. Peter said he was not. This was the 2nd time Peter denied. One servant from the high priest said he saw Peter was in the garden with Jesus. Peter denied again, for the 3rd time, then immediately the cock crowing. Jesus’s prophecy on Peter had been fulfilled.Caiaphas’ officers escorted Jesus to the hall of judgement. Themselves did not go into the hall, because they could be defiled by going into the hall, and they still wished to eat the feast of the Passover. They gave Jesus to Pilate, and said if this man did not sin, they could not send him to the judgement hall. Pilate asked the Jews to judge Jesus by Moses law, and the Jews answered they could not put Jesus to death by the Moses law. Jesus’s words on his own death was fulfilled.约18:33 彼拉多又进了衙门,叫耶稣来,对他说:“你是犹太人的王吗?”Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? 约18:34 耶稣回答说:“这话是你自己说的,还是别人论我对你说的呢?”Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done? Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all. 约18:39 但你们有个规矩,在逾越节要我给你们释放一个人,你们要我给你们释放犹太人的王吗?”But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber. Then, Pilate began to ask Jesus, was Jesus the King of Jews. Jesus asked back because of whom Pilate speaking so: was it from Pilate his own question, or from what the Jews told him. Pilate said he was not a Jew, and asked Jesus why the Jews sent him to see Pilate. Then, Jesus answered his kingdom was not in the world on earth. If the kingdom of Jesus was on earth, his all servants could fight with the Jews and not let the Jews sent him to the judgement hall. Pilate asked Jesus was him a king. Jesus answered Pilate said he was a king, and for this reason Jesus was born on earth to bear the witness of the truth. Everyone who had truth in heart could understand what Jesus said to the public. Then, Pilate asked what should be the truth. Then, Pilate went out of the hall and told the Jews that he could not find any fault from Jesus. And asked them did they wish to release Jesus as the King of the Jews for the feast of the Passover. Then, the Jews said they did not want Jesus, but they wanted the robber Barabbas to be free. Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands. Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him. 彼拉多对他们说:“你们看这个人!”Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man! When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him. The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid; And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. 你岂不知我有权柄释放你,也有权柄把你钉十字架吗?”Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.Pilate whipped Jesus, and the soldiers placed a thorn crown on his head and covered his body by a purple robe. Then, they laughed at Jesus that this was the King of the Jews. Pilate then brought Jesus out of the hall to see the Jews, and let them know Pilate found no fault on Jesus. Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. The thorn crown represented his suffering. The purple robe represented Jesus is the King as of King Solomon. The chief priest and the Jews saw Jesus and yelling to crucify Jesus. Then Pilate told the Jews to crucify Jesus by their own request, and Pilate himself found no fault on Jesus. The Jews repeated that by the Moses law, Jesus must die because his blasphemy on God by saying he was the Son of God. Then, Pilate felt so afraid on it, because Pilate was a clear mind man who had no hatred on Jesus. Even Pilate knew it was against the law to crucify a man without fault, and this man was the King by some reason. Pilate did not want to take responsibility on Jesus’s death and shifted the reason to the Jews.Pilate went in and asked Jesus where he came from. Jesus did not answer him. Pilate said he had the authority to either release Jesus or crucify Jesus. Jesus answered if there were no authority given to Pilate, he would have no power to make the decision on Jesus. The power that Pilate had was from God in heaven. Then, Jesus said the greater sin would fall upon the one who sent Jesus to Pilate, who were the Jews, the Pharisees and the high priests. The greater sin was called the transgression sin. Which means people knew the law and still against the law. And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar. When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. 约有午正,彼拉多对犹太人说:“看哪,这是你们的王!”And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King! 祭司长回答说:“除了凯撒,我们没有王!”But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away. Then, Pilate wanted to release Jesus, however the Jews saying if Pilate released Jesus, even Pilate against the law on Caesar, because except Caesar there was no other king. Then, Pilate took Jesus to sit in the judgement seat in a place called Pavement. This day was the preparation day for the feast of Passover. At 6 o’clock in the morning, Pilate shew Jesus to the Jews as the King. The Jews yelling to crucify Jesus, and Pilate asked back could he crucify their King. Then, the chief priests said they had no king except Caesar. Then, Pilate let soldiers take Jesus to be crucified. For the Jews in that generation, they had no spirit or understanding or wisdom from God. All they had were earthly things. They never took God as their king, but took the earthly government as their king. And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. The Roman government took Jesus out and let him carrying a cross for his own. At Golgotha, they crucified Jesus on the cross, together with another 2 prisoners. Pilate wrote a title for Jesus as the King of the Jews, in 3 languages the Hebrew, Greek and Latin. The chief priests denied this title, but Pilate still put this title for Jesus. Pilate understood it was the Jews’problem to kill Jesus, even though he did not understand the reason. Pilate respected Jesus and believed Jesus was the King of the Jews. Pilate wrote the title in 3 languages. Once Jesus was crucified, Jesus became the King of all, of all people who spoke Hebrew, Greek and Latin. It was the crucifixion made Jesus the King and it was the Jews who hated Jesus to be the King, accomplished Jesus’s mission as the King of all races. Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did. Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. 约19:26 耶稣见母亲和他所爱的那门徒站在旁边,就对他母亲说:“母亲(原文作“妇人”),看,你的儿子!”When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. The soldiers slit the garment into 4 pieces and took one piece everyone. But they did not tear the coat, for they decided to let one person get it by lot. This was the fulfillment of the ancient scriptures.Beside the cross, there were virgin Mary, her sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas and Magdalene Mary. Jesus gave virgin Mary a new son, who was apostle John, and gave John a mother. On the cross, Jesus knew all the mission that God planned for him finished, as the scripture fulfilled. Jesus said he was thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced. They did not give Jesus water to drink, but give Jesus a touch of vinegar from the sponge. Once received the vinegar, Jesus said it was finished, and then died on the cross. The Jews did not want Jesus’s body staying on the cross on the Sabbath day, they asked Pilate to break Jesus’s leg for them to take him down. Then, the soldier came to break down the legs for the 2 prisoners. The soldier came to Jesus and used a spear poked into the chest, and blood and water came out from Jesus’s body. Hence, the soldier did not break Jesus’s legs because he thought Jesus might still alive. Hence, the scripture fulfilled. And the scripture also said they shall look on him whom they pierced, which meant in the future the Romans also need Jesus as their savior. And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand. After Jesus died on the cross, Joseph of Arimathaea came to Pilate and asked for Jesus’s body. Pilate gave him Jesus’s body and let them leave. Nicodemus brought myrrh and aloes for burying Jesus’s body. They wiped Jesus’s body with all the spices by a piece of linen, and buried him in a new mound in the garden close to the crucified place. The day was the preparation day for the feast of Passover.
